Maryam Hamka vanished after leaving a Woolworths store on Albert Street, in the inner-city suburb of Brunswick at 5.30 pm last Saturday. She is described as being 165cm tall, with a thin build and long black hair, brown eyes, and an olive complexion.

She was last seen wearing a black dress and had told family she intended to visit a friend in Brighton prior to her disappearance. Her loved ones hold grave fears for her safety and say that it is out of character for Ms Hamka to not have contacted her sister by now.

Ms Hamka’s family said it is unusual for her to not call or check-in her nephew who she saw almost every day.
“For her to just disappear, to not call and check on him, it’s very out of character.”

Last night, detectives searched a property on Well Street, Brighton, and arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with the disappearance.

A 45-year-old Brighton man was arrested at a Well Street home on Friday night. Detective Inspector Stamper said he understood the man was a “former partner” of Ms Hamka.

Police-sized bags of evidence including the man’s computer and red Mazda. He is currently assisting the police with their inquiries. Detectives are appealing to anyone with information regarding Maryam’s whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

He said if any residents of Well Street heard anything “suspicious” on Saturday night to contact Crimestoppers. Leading Senior Constable Kendra Jackson said the investigation into the disappearance was continuing.

“The Brighton man is currently assisting police with their inquiries,” she said.

“Investigators have released images of Maryam in the hope someone recognizes her and can provide information on her whereabouts.”

Detective Inspector Stamper said it was “early days” in the investigation when asked about the arrest.

“There’s a lot that we don’t know, and there’s a lot that I can’t share at the moment,” he said.
